HLWW High School, in partnership with Ridgeview Sports Medicine, is pleased to offer a concussion management program called ‘ImPACTTM’ for all student athletes in grades 7-12. ImPACTTM is a computer-based program that measures brain function in areas such as: attention span, working memory, sustained and selective attention time, non-verbal problem solving, and reaction time.
The ImPACTTM test is administered before athletes participate in a sport to get a baseline score. If a head injury occurs during the course of a sports season, the same test maybe repeated. The ‘before and after’ comparison gives medical providers (including the athletic trainer) an idea of how severe a concussion may be and is used to help determine when it is safe for an athlete to return to playing their sport. Other clinically relevant measures are used to pace practices, workouts, hours of school per day, etc. When it is determined that a concussion is present following a head injury, we are in partnership with you, the school nurse, teachers, coaches and other relevant medical providers such as your primary care physician.
Baseline testing for HLWW High School athletes is free. If your child sustains a concussion during the school year, post-injury testing will be available at the high school or at Ridgeview Medical Center. There is no charge for post-injury testing, but your child may need to follow-up with a medical provider such as an MD, DO, PA-C or NP, and you may have a charge depending on your insurance coverage. Baseline testing for HLWW athletes will begin August 15th and must be completed by August 19th. Baseline testing will be for any athlete that has not had a baseline test in the last year ( testing is done every other year) Coaches get a list of athletes who need testing at the beginning of each season.
Additional information about the ImPACTTM program and the testing schedule at HLWW High School may be available. Contact HLWW's Athletic Trainer to set up a test time.
